Metso Power Oy networks global business processes securely through the Internet

Metso Power is the global leader for delivering recovery systems to chemical pulp mills and it takes pride in being the designer and supplier of the world’s largest recovery boilers. The business is based on enormous and demanding power plant projects. “We supply recovery boilers, power boilers, evaporators and services to the pulp and paper industry, and boilers and services to the power generation, utility and other process industries. The amount of information produced during such a project is immense,” says Mr. Harry Wahlroos, Development Manager of Metso Power Oy, Finland. “We have virtual project teams, the members of which are located around the world. These people include project personnel in our offices, supervisors and engineering on construction sites, sales people, business partners and management. They all need the same mobile services, information and applications to be able to do their work as in the office. We needed to create a common global meeting place for all these people in order to rise to future challenges. In addition to that, we want to outsource the solution’s management to be able to concentrate on our core business.”

Information, services and applications that are crucial for the people working in the projects are critical for Metso Power’s business. “Sharing the information must be real-time and secure. We need a cost-efficient and flexible solution that supports our business processes and enables real-time information sharing securely,” Mr. Wahlroos points out. “An information sharing solution that is seamlessly integrated with our business processes boosts people’s work and our business.”

Metso Power needs a management-free solution that supports the company’s business processes and enables secure sharing of data and applications. Metso Power shares, for example, supply and shipping management information, project documentation, PDM (product data management), intranet, e-mail, bulletin boards and extranet services through Insta PartnerNet.

Since 1999, Insta has provided Metso Power (ex-Kvaerner Power) with a secure enterprise portal specifically designed for the company. The portal is supplied as a service that includes all management tasks, Web-based user interfaces, CA-services and smart cards for user authentication. The portal’s information security is realised with VPN products and the whole solution’s conformity with Metso’s business processes is guaranteed by Insta’s consulting and specialist services.
